This bed pairs climbing beans, sunflowers, and potatoes, and the combination is going well this year — the sunflowers give the beans something tall to climb, and the potatoes fill out the space at ground level.
There’s also a self-seeded kale plant that turned up on its own partway through the season. It wasn’t part of the plan, but it’s settled in well enough that I let it stay.
By late July it’s grown into one of the fuller, more layered beds in the garden — tall flowers, climbing beans, and low foliage all doing their own thing in the same small footprint.
