Coming back to the garden after weeks away at the cottage, and it’s completely overgrown. Every bed has gone wild in my absence.

But I know from experience: once you actually start clearing, the treasures come back into view. There’s always more underneath the weeds than you’d expect.

The raspberries didn’t wait for me either — thriving regardless of how tall the grass around them got.

Even the beds closest to the gravel path have gone thick with growth.

There’s an upside to all the weeds, too: with this much extra greenery around, the slugs have plenty of other things to eat besides just my vegetables, so the damage this year has actually been lighter than usual.

One of the loveliest surprises waiting under the overgrowth: the cabbage and marigolds have gone completely wild together, kale and bright orange calendula tangled up in the best possible way.

The sunflowers have shot up too, towering over everything else in their bed.

And the tomatoes in the greenhouse have kept climbing right through it all, completely unbothered by the fact that no one was around to tie them in for a few weeks.
