Started this year’s winter sowing today. This bed gets spinach as its first batch — it’s tough enough for the tail end of a Nordic winter, and we go through more of it than any other green.
It was a nice day for it, snowy and sunny.
First, scrape off the snow — not all of it, just enough that there isn’t a thick layer sitting on top.
Cover with a layer of soil that isn’t frozen through.
Then sprinkle the seed. I sow in rows when I want a more orderly harvest, but for an early, quick spinach batch like this one I just scatter it.
Cover with about 1–2 cm of soil.
No watering — instead, a layer of snow goes back on top. It stays frozen until spring, and melts exactly when the seed needs it to.
Last step, a cold frame over the bed.
This was one of about twenty beds I winter-sowed today — more to come.
