Every year has its low point, and this year it’s this bed: scorzonera, carrot, parsnip, and chard, all sown together and all, to varying degrees, a disappointment.

The carrots are the worst of it — not a single one came up. The parsnips did a little better, though only a handful made it, and the scorzonera gave me the odd root here and there rather than anything like a harvest.

It’s a useful reminder that not everything works every year, even with the same approach that’s worked before. The bed right next to this one, growing zucchini, is doing considerably better — which at least makes the contrast educational rather than just discouraging.
