I’ve always been a bit of a lazy grower at heart, and this year I’m genuinely wondering whether I’ll manage to keep up with everything. My child wants to be out here with me now, which is lovely, but it does slow things down considerably — every task takes three times as long when there are small hands helping.

Today’s job is taking out the kale that’s finished and making room for the tomato and padron pepper seedlings, which are frankly looking a bit sad and leggy after too long indoors. They’ve been neglected while other things took priority, but hopefully a bit of real sun and proper soil will bring them back.

We’ll see how the season goes. Some years everything gets done on schedule and some years it very much doesn’t, and I’m trying to make peace with this being one of the slower ones.
