January is when I go through the whole seed box — everything gets pulled out, sorted, and checked against what’s still viable versus what needs replacing before the sowing season properly kicks off.

It’s a satisfying, slightly nerdy ritual: packets from three different seed companies, a few hand-labelled envelopes from seeds I saved myself, and the inevitable pile of “why do I have four kinds of the same variety.” Worth doing properly, though — nothing worse than reaching for a packet in March and discovering it’s from 2019.
