Making a new batch of soap today. I usually add turmeric for color and texture, but this time I kept it simple — just bergamot essential oil. Smells lovely.
Cold process soap is really just oils, lye and water, blended until it thickens — no fillers, no mystery ingredients, and you control exactly what goes into it. It’s satisfying in the same way gardening is: slow, a bit of a process, and you end up with something real at the end of it.
I pour the batter into whatever mold I have on hand — this time an old milk carton, cut open once the soap had set. No reason to buy a proper mold when a rinsed-out carton does the job just as well.
A few weeks of curing later, it’s ready to cut and use.
Fewer ingredients, a lot less packaging, and a bar that actually smells the way you wanted it to — that’s really the whole appeal.
