One of the best things about the new kitchen garden area is finally having room for a proper perennial strawberry bed. I picked two varieties and bought plants rather than starting from seed — a shortcut, but it means a real harvest in the first season instead of waiting a year. Twelve plants in one bed, fed with cow manure before planting, netted against the birds, and then mostly just left alone. Strawberries come back on their own for four or five years before the plants need replacing.

Almost too easy. And too good.
