Alongside the sauna, the other big structure at the cottage is our tiny house — 30 square meters, and we built it ourselves from the ground up.

One decision I’m particularly glad we made: we installed both a regular stove and a wood-fired kitchen range, rather than picking just one. It meant giving up a bit of floor space, but having the wood range for cooking feels true to what a cottage kitchen should be.

Space is obviously at a premium at 30 square meters, so we had to get creative. The staircase up to the sleeping loft sits directly above the wood range, using vertical space that would otherwise have gone to waste.

It’s a small footprint, but it doesn’t feel cramped — every part of it is doing double duty, which is really the whole point of building tiny in the first place.
