Started this bed today — end of October, a full season ahead of when it’ll actually produce. I harvested the bulbs from last year’s Jerusalem artichoke bed to get things going: surprisingly many and surprisingly large, considering how little space they’d had to grow in. One plant alone gave about 25 bulbs — 15 to plant here, the rest for dinner.
Some of the bulbs were huge.
Picked out the fifteen best for planting.
A little chicken manure first — less than the packet recommends, since Jerusalem artichokes don’t need as much as heavier feeders like garlic. Then the bulbs go in, a bit closer together than usual, about 10 cm deep.
A layer of leaves on top to finish, and now this bed just rests until spring, when it’s time to add beans for them to climb.
